Public Data Ferret: Archive of Live Radio Segments

by Matt Rosenberg June 2nd, 2010

Public Data Ferret began its life as an independent initiative of Countywide Community Forums. As of November, 2010 it is a program of a planned new non-profit organization called Public Eye Northwest. Public Data Ferret is a database searchable by topic and/or jurisdiction, composed of neutral, blogged synopses of important public documents, and tutorials on user-friendly government databases. Shortly after Public Data Ferret’s launch, we began a regular weekly live segment on the “Nine To Noon” show KOMO 1000 AM, Seattle, which lasted until the show was cancelled in mid-September 2010. The Ferret project continues. Following are the Ferret radio segments, each in the form of a blog article with an audio link to and a full transcript of the radio conversation, plus a link to the original Ferret write-up.

We also discussed Public Data Ferret, and Countywide Community Forums recently with other guests in a broader conversation titled “Technology And Civic Engagement” on one of Seattle’s public radio stations, KUOW-FM. In addition, one of our Ferret scoops got a write-up in the Seattle PI.com. The PI has also written about the Ferret project in a round-up of Seattle-area transparency initiatives, as has the New America Foundation’s blog, Sustaining Democracy In A Digital Age. A central piece of the Journalism That Matters-Pacific Northwest “Building On Transparency” initiative, Ferret also was covered in a recent report by Heidi Dietrich at the blog of the Washington News Council, which was in turn highlighted by the national journalism blog of Jim Romenesko, with the Poynter Institute.

The Ferret project has also recruited University of Washington communication grad Andrew Hart as Contributing Editor.

You can follow the Ferret on Twitter. And collaborate.
